Schon scharret mein Rösslein mit lustigem Fuß;

Du hast mich wohl [nimmermehr]2 traurig gesehn,
So kann es auch jetzt nicht beim Abschied geschehn.

Nun reit' ich am silbernen Strome entlang,

Note: in Schubert's autograph, line 3 begins "Jetzt nimm ich den letzten", but in printed editions except Neue Gesamtausgabe, it is "Jetzt nimm noch den".

Farvel! Du muntre og glade by, farvel!
Min hest tripper allerede med lystig fot;
Ta nå imot den siste adskillende hilsen.
Du har vel ennå ikke sett meg sørgmodig,
så skal heller ikke skje ved denne avskjed.

Farvel, dere trær, dere grønneste av hager, farvel!
Nå rir jeg langs den sølvskimrende elven.
Vidt gjallende toner min avskjedssang;
Aldri har dere hørt en trist vise,
den skal heller ikke skjenkes dere ved denne avskjeden.
 
Farvel, dere vennlige ungpiker, farvel!
Hvorfor skuer dere med skjelmske, lokkende
blikk ut av det blomsterduftende huset?
Hva annet kan jeg gjøre enn å hilse og se meg tilbake,
men aldri vender jeg om min hest.

Farvel, kjære sol, så går du til ro, farvel!
Nå skimrer de blinkende stjerners gull.
Hvor dere himmelens stjerner er meg kjær;
Hvor enn vi reiser i verden - vidt og bredt,
