Note: in Schubert's autograph, line 3 begins "Jetzt nimm ich den letzten", but in printed editions except Neue Gesamtausgabe, it is "Jetzt nimm noch den".

Adieu ! toi légère, toi joyeuse ville, adieu !
Déjà mon petit cheval piaffe, le pied folâtre ;
Maintenant accepte le dernier salut, celui du départ,
Tu ne m'as encore jamais vu triste,
Aussi cela ne pourra arriver au moment des adieux.

Adieu, vous arbres, vous jardins si verts, adieu !
Maintenant je chevauche le long du fleuve argenté.
Au loin retentit l'écho de mon chant d'adieu ;
Vous n'avez jamais entendu un chant triste,
Aussi je ne vous en ferai pas cadeau au départ !

Adieu, vous là-bas gentilles filles, adieu !
Que regardez-vous de vos maisons parfumées,
D'un regard mutin et attirant ?
Comment ne pas les saluer et jeter un coup d'œil,
Pourtant jamais je ne tournerai bride.
