Kam aber die Mitternachtstunde heran, Ein seltsames Singen und Klingen begann - An die Türe da hört er es pochen. Sie aber, sie hat ihn gar schalkhaft geneckt, Sie hat ihm ganz leise den Kopf bedeckt Mit dem weißen, demantenen Schleier. In einen kristallenen Wasserpalast Ist plötzlich gezaubert der Ritter. Er staunt, und die Augen erblinden ihm fast Vor alle dem Glanz und Geflitter. Doch hält ihn die Nixe umarmet gar traut, Der Ritter ist Bräut'gam, die Nixe ist Braut, Ihre Jungfraun spielen die Zither. Il se tenait souvent dans le coin le plus obscur de la maison ; Il s'était claquemuré à l'abri des hommes. Parfois il étendait les bras en soupirant, Pourtant ne prononçait pas le moindre mot. Mais quand arrivait l'heure de minuit, S'élevaient un son et un chant étrange – Il entend alors frapper à la porte. Alors sa bien-aimée se faufile à l'intérieur Dans le bruissement de sa robe d'écume de mer, Elle est épanouie et irradie comme une petite rose, Son voile est une précieuse parure.
