Kring den gröna broddens späda stänglar,

Nu, så hör hur flickan där beter sig:
Har den svarta, sorgens stängel, vuxit,
Talar hon och sörjer med de andra.
Har den röda, glädjens stängel, vuxit, 
Talar hon och fröjdas med de andra.

um des grünen Grases zarte Halme
seid’ne Fäden in verschied’nen Farben;
doch sie kehrt am nächsten Morgen dorthin
wieder, um ihr künftig Los zu lesen.

Nun, so hört, wie sie sich dann verhält:
Ist der schwarze Sorgenhalm gewachsen,
sagt sie klagend es den andern Mädchen.
Ist der rote Halm des Glücks gewachsen,
sagt sie freudig es den andern Mädchen.
Ist der grüne Liebeshalm gewachsen,
schweigt sie still und jubiliert im Herzen.
