Flickan knyter, i Johanne-natten
Kring den gröna broddens späda stänglar,
Silkestrådar utaf¹ skilda färger;
Men, på morgonstunden, går hon sedan
Dit, att leta ut sin framtids öden.

Nu, så hör hur flickan där beter sig:
Har den svarta, sorgens stängel, vuxit,
Talar hon och sörjer med de andra.
Har den röda, glädjens stängel, vuxit, 
Talar hon och fröjdas med de andra.
Har den gröna, kärleks stängeln, vuxit,
Tiger hon och fröjdas i sitt hjerta².
