Paa andre Aare eg gjeng og gronar,
og endaa tykkj' eg det lite monar.
Det er ei Gjente eg tenkjer paa,
dei Tankan kann eg 'kje koma fraa.

Eg veit 'kje eingong um ho er vene';
ho gjenge berre i Bygdom tener.
Eg veit 'kje koss ho kann verte sjaa,
men eg veit ho er till aa lita paa.

Eg er ein Gut baade snaal og plente 
og ho den uvandast Bondegjente,
ho gjeng og trælar i Vesaldom,
men det veit eg er daa inga Skam.

Nei mi er Skamma, som so mun svive 
og aldri viss paa meg sjölv kann blive.
Aa gjev eg snart det maatt' finne ut 
og so faa sleppe mi lange Sut.

For visst det er, at eg Sut maa berra,
og allstött noko i Hjarta skjerre.
Skuld alle hava det som eg 
daa Kjærlegheita var vanskeleg.

Sur la première corde IV

Durant deux ans j'ai avancé et réfléchi
et je crois que la lumière est apparue.
C'est à une fille que je pense,
je ne peux en libérer mes pensées.

Je ne sais même pas si elle est gentille ;
elle gagne juste son pain dans le canton.
Je ne sais pas quelle allure elle a,
mais je sais qu'on peut lui faire confiance.

Je suis un gars étrange et circonspect,
et elle est la simple fille d'un fermier,
elle vit et besogne dans la misère,
mais je sais qu'il n'y a pas de honte à cela.

Non, la honte est pour moi qui tourne ainsi en rond
et ne sais pas du tout ce que je vais devenir.
Oh j'aimerais bien le savoir rapidement
et être ainsi libéré de ces soucis permanents.

Car c'est certain, je dois supporter bien des soucis,
et j'ai quelque chose qui me blesse le cœur.
S'il en allait ainsi pour tout le monde,
alors l'amour serait chose difficile.
