Ein Hochzeitbitter zog der Lenz
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Ein Hochzeitbitter zog der Lenz
[Den Wald entlang]1 und See,
Zog hin mit Sang und Klange,
Mir aber ward so bange,
Als läge noch der Schnee.
Und Gäste lud zu sich der Lenz,
Mich aber lud er nicht,
[Er sah mich]2, ach! gefangen,
Ich hing an jenen Wangen,
An jenem Angesicht.
Nun bin ich frei, nun kommt der Lenz,
Nun erst genieß' ich ganz,
Wenn ruh'ger auch und stiller,
Der Bäche grünen Schiller,
Der Rosen frischen Glanz.

Like a marriage suitor Spring advanced
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Like a marriage suitor Spring advanced
along the forest and lake,
advanced with singing and music,
but I was so fearful
while snow was still lying on the ground.
And Spring invited guests to join him,
but he did not invite me,
he saw me, alas!, captivated,
I hung on those cheeks,
on that face.
Now I am free, now Spring comes,
now at last I enjoy it fully,
even if more calmly and quietly,
the brooks’ green luster,
the roses’ fresh radiance.
