Blätter wehen vom Baume
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Blätter wehen vom Baume,
Lieder vom Lebenstraume
Wehen spielend dahin;
Vieles ist untergegangen,
Seit wir zuerst sie sangen,
Zärtliche Melodien.

Sterblich sind auch die Lieder,
Keines tönt ewig wieder,
Alle verweht der Wind:
Blumen und Schmetterlinge,
Die unvergänglicher Dinge
Flüchtiges Gleichnis sind.

Leaves drift from the tree
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Leaves drift from the tree,
Songs from the dream of life
Waft playfully off;
Much has passed away
Since we first sang them,
Tender melodies.

Songs are mortal too,
Not one shall sound again for all eternity,
The wind wafts them all off:
Flowers and butterflies,
Which are the fleeting metaphors
For unperishable things.
