Schon riecht es scharf nach angewelkten Blättern, Kornfelder stehen leer und ohne Blick; Wir wissen: eines von den nächsten Wettern Bricht unserm müden Sommer das Genick. Die Ginsterschoten knistern. Plötzlich wird Uns all das fern und sagenhaft erscheinen, Was heut wir in der Hand zu halten meinen, Und jede Blume wunderbar verirrt. Bang wächst ein Wunsch in der erschreckten Seele: Daß sie nicht allzu sehr am Dasein klebe, Daß sie das Welken wie ein Baum erlebe, Daß Fest und Farbe ihrem Herbst nicht fehle.

Schon ist, was so bezaubernd klang, Vergessen und versungen. Im Wald das Sommerabendfest, Der Vollmond überm Berge droben, Wer schrieb sie auf, wer hielt sie fest? Ist alles schon zerstoben. Und bald wird auch von dir und mir Kein Mensch mehr wissen und erzählen, Es wohnen andre Leute hier, Wir werden keinem fehlen. Wir wollen auf den Abendstern Und auf die ersten Nebel warten. Wir blühen und verblühen gern In Gottes großem Garten.

10. September
Der Garten trauert, Kühl sinkt in die Blumen der Regen. Der Sommer schauert Still seinem Ende entgegen. Golden tropft Blatt um Blatt Nieder vom hohen Akazienbaum. Sommer lächelt erstaunt und matt In den sterbenden Gartentraum. Lange noch bei den Rosen Bleibt er stehen, sehnt sich nach Ruh. Langsam tut er die großen Müdgewordnen Augen zu.

Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern! Einsam ist jeder Busch und Stein, Kein Baum sieht den andern, Jeder ist allein. Voll Freunden war mir die Welt, Als noch mein Leben licht war; Nun, da der Nebel fällt, Ist keiner mehr sichtbar. Wahrlich, keiner ist weise, Der nicht das Dunkel kennt, Das unentrinnbar und leise Von allen ihn trennt. Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern! Leben ist Einsamsein. Kein Mensch kennt den andern, Jeder ist allein.

Trunken sitz ich des Nachts im durchwehten Gehölz, An den singenden Zweigen hat Herbst genagt; Murmelnd läuft in den Keller, Meine leere Flasche zu füllen, der Wirt. Morgen, morgen haut mir der bleiche Tod Seine klirrende Sense ins rote Fleisch, Lange schon auf der Lauer Weiß ich ihn liegen, den grimmen Feind. Ihn zu höhnen, sing ich die halbe Nacht, Lalle mein trunkenes Lied in den müden Wald; Seiner Drohung zu lachen Ist meines Liedes und meines Trinkens Sinn. Jede Blüte will zur Frucht, Jeder Morgen Abend werden, Ewiges ist nicht auf Erden Als der Wandel, als die Flucht. Auch der schönste Sommer will Einmal Herbst und Welke spüren. Halte, Blatt, geduldig still, Wenn der Wind dich will entführen. Spiel dein Spiel und wehr dich nicht, Laß es still geschehen. Laß vom Winde, der dich bricht, Dich nach Hause wehen.

Wald läßt die Blätter sinken, Talnebel hängen schwer, Es hat der Strom kein Blinken, Der Wald kein Rauschen mehr. Da kommt der Sturm gepfiffen Und schüttelt lichtes Haar Und fegt mit festen Griffen Das Land vom Nebel klar. Er schont nicht Laub nicht Äste, Nichts Hübsches ist ihm wert, Der Vogel bangt im Neste, Der Bauer friert am Herd. Räum auf und brich in Scherben, Was nimmer halten mag, Und reiß aus Nacht und Sterben Empor den lichten Tag!

Vom Baum des Lebens fällt Mir Blatt um Blatt, O taumelbunte Welt, Wie machst du satt, Wie machst du satt und müd, Wie machst du trunken! Was heut noch glüht, Ist bald versunken. Bald klirrt der Wind Über mein braunes Grab, Über das kleine Kind Beugt sich die Mutter herab. Ihre Augen will ich wiedersehn, Ihr Blick ist mein Stern, Alles andre mag gehn und verwehn, Alles stirbt, alles stirbt gern. Nur die ewige Mutter bleibt, Von der wir kamen, Ihr spielender Finger schreibt In die flüchtige Luft unsre Namen.
