Blätter wehen vom Baume,
Lieder vom Lebenstraume
Wehen spielend dahin;
Vieles ist untergegangen,
Seit wir zuerst sie sangen,
Zärtliche Melodien.

Sterblich sind auch die Lieder,
Keines tönt ewig wieder,
Alle verweht der Wind:
Blumen und Schmetterlinge,
Die unvergänglicher Dinge
Flüchtiges Gleichnis sind.

Silbern überflogen
Ruhet das Feld und schweigt,
Ein Jäger hebt seinen Bogen,
Der Wald rauscht und eine Lerche steigt.

Der Wald rauscht und eine zweite
Steigt auf und fällt.
Ein Jäger hebt seine Beute
Und der Tag tritt in die Welt.

Es singt ein Schnitter auf der Rast,
Im Dufte schwelgt der reife Klee --
O du, daß du das alte Weh
Mir wieder wachgesungen hast!

Volkslieder, Kinderlieder gehn
Leistönig auf im Abendwind,
Und wieder schmerzen alle Wehn,
Die doch vernarbt, vergessen sind.

Spätabendwolken segeln zier,
Die Erde atmet warm und weit . . .

Eine Glocke läutet
Im Grund fernab,
Läutet und bedeutet
Ein frisches Grab.
 
Ein Lautenschlagen
Vom andern Tal
Bringt hergetragen
Der Wind zumal.
 
Mir aber will bedeuten:
Liedsang und Sterbeläuten
Ist recht für einen Wandrer
Zusammengestimmt.
 
Mich wundert, ob ein andrer
Die beiden zumal vernimmt?
