Ich sah ein Röschen am Wege steh'n,
Es war so blühend und wunderschön,
Es hauchte Balsam weit um sich her,
Ich wollt' es brechen und stach mich sehr.

Ihr lieben Mädchen, dies sing' ich euch!
Ihr seid in allem dem Röschen gleich;
Ihr lockt durch Schönheit uns um euch her,
Und seid dann spröde und quält uns sehr.

Doch hört nun weiter, was [drauf]1 gescheh'n:
Ich ging von dannen und ließ es steh'n
Und eh' sein Ende der Tag erreicht,
War's von der Sonne ganz ausgebleicht.

Und nun die Lehre? Sie ist nicht schwer;
Drum sag' ich weiter kein Wörtchen mehr.
Leicht könnt ihr zeigen, daß ihr sie wisst,
Wenn ihr nun alle den Sänger küsst.

Ik zag een roosje langs ’t paadje staan

Zijn bloei was prachtig om ga te slaan,
Het spreidde geuren wijd om zich heen,
Ik wou het breken, stak me gemeen.
 
O lieve meisjes, hoor wat ik zing!
Je lijkt in alles op ’t kleine ding;
Je lokt met schoonheid ons naar je toe
En doet dan moeilijk, geeft veel gedoe.
 
Maar hoor nu verder, hoe ’t is gegaan:
Ik ging van daar weg en liet het staan,
En vóór de dag had zijn eind bereikt,
Was ’t door het zonlicht zijn kleur gans kwijt.
 
Wat is de les nu? ’t Is simpel zeer;
Dus zeg ik verder geen woordje meer.
Laat mij ’t maar merken: ik ben gerust,
Als je nu allen de zanger kust.
