Naar Døden kommer, kommer du -
du Livets røde Lys, Lenore.
Og Døden dør i samme Nu 
for dine glade Øjne store.

Saa er jeg Dødens ej men din.
Og ingen Taarer, ingen Klagelæg 
blot din røde Mund paa min,
og tag din Sjæl tilbage.

Saa har jeg seet for sidste Gang min 
Elskerindes Øje straale,
og hvad jeg synded, hvad jeg sang,
de andre veje maa og maale.

Men du vil stundom tænke paa,
naar Natten falder for din Rude,
blufærdige Violer blaa, 
som duftede derude.

Quand viendra la mort, tu viendras
Quand viendra la mort, tu viendras,
toi, rouge lumière de la vie, Lenore.
Et la mort mourra à l'instant
devant l'éclat de tes grands yeux.

Je ne serai alors  pas à la mort, mais à toi.
Et il n'y aura aucune larme, aucune plainte,
juste ta bouche rouge sur la mienne,
et tu reprendras ton âme.

Ainsi j'aurai vu pour la dernière fois
briller les yeux de ma bien-aimée.
et ce que j'ai commis, ce que j'ai chanté,
les autres pourront le peser et le mesurer.

Alors parfois tu songeras,
Lorsque tombera la nuit  devant ta fenêtre
aux chastes violettes bleues
qui embaumaient dehors.
