Als ich die alte Grabschrift sah
Im eingesunknen Marmorstein,
Da fiel mein totes Lieb mir ein.

O Gott, ich schrieb schon tausendmal
Das gleiche Lied aus gleicher Qual,
Und war doch keins wie dieses da:
"Dem Auge fern, dem Herzen nah!"

Quan vaig veure el vell epitafi
en l’enfonsada pedra de marbre,
vaig pensar en el meu amor mort.

Oh Déu, he escrit ja mil vegades
la mateixa cançó sobre la mateixa pena
i no n’hi havia cap com aquesta:
“Lluny dels ulls, a prop del cor!”
