Als elevats merlets del castell estava l’ancià rei i trist observava l’ombrívol país cobert de núvols. La tempesta amenaçava amb la violència d’un temporal, ell posà la mà dreta al pom de la seva espasa. La mà esquerra, que ja havia deixat caure el ceptre d’or, aguantava encara, al seu sorrut front, la feixuga corona d’or. Aleshores, la seva amant estirà suaument l’orla del seu mantell: “Adés tu m’has estimat, m’estimes una mica encara?” “Què són l’amor, el desig i la passió? Deixa estar tot això, tu dolça criatura! La tempesta amenaça amb la violència d’un temporal. Als merlets del castell no sóc pas el rei amb corona i espasa, sóc l’impotent i angoixat fill dels temps turbulents.
