Auf hohen Burgeszinnen
   Der alte König stand,
Und überschaute düster
   Das düster umwölkte Land.
 
Es zog das Ungewitter
   Mit Sturmesgewalt herauf,
Er stützte seine Rechte
   Auf seines Schwertes Knauf.
 
Die Linke, der entsunken
   Das gold'ne [Zepter]1 schon,
Hielt noch auf der finstern Stirne
   Die schwere goldne Kron'.
 
Da zog ihn seine Buhle
   Leis' an des Mantels Saum:
Du hast mich einst geliebet,
   Du liebst mich wohl noch kaum?
 
Was Lieb' und Lust und Minne?
   Laß ab, du süße Gestalt!
Das Ungewitter ziehet
   Herauf mit Sturmesgewalt.
 
Ich bin auf Burgeszinnen
   Nicht König mit Schwert und Kron',
Ich bin der empörten Zeiten
   Unmächtiger, bangender Sohn.

Onweer

Op hoge burchtkantelen
Stond d' oude vorst geplant
En overschouwde somber
Het donker bewolkte land.
 
Een storm kwam aangedreven,
Een onweer in volle vaart.
Zijn rechterhand omklemde
De knop van 't steunend zwaard.
 
Zijn linker droeg geen scepter,
Zoals hij was gewoon,
Maar hield op zijn somb're voorhoofd
De zware gouden kroon.
 
Opeens trok 's konings liefje
Zacht aan zijn mantelzoom:
"Eens gaf je mij veel liefde;
Nu lijkt dat haast een droom."
 
"Wát liefde, lust en hartstocht?
Houd op, vriendin die mij kwelt!
De onweerslucht trekt dreigend
Hierheen met dond'rend geweld.
 
Ik ben op burchtkantelen
Geen koning met zwaard en kroon:
Ik ben van oproer'ge tijden
D' onmachtige, vrezende zoon."
