Из чаши бытия,
Зачем тогда в венке из роз
К теням не отбыл я!

Зачем вы начертались так
На памяти моей,
Единой молодости знак,
Вы, песни прошлых дней!
Я горы, долы и леса,
И милый взгляд забыл;
Зачем же ваши голоса
Мне слух мой сохранил!

Не возвратите счастья мне,
Хоть дышит в вас оно!
С ним в промелькнувшей старине
Простился я давно.
Не нарушайте ж, я молю,
Вы сна души моей;
И слова страшного люблю
Не повторяйте ей!

Mylėti arba žūt,
Kuomet svajas ir troškimus
Savy slėpei galbūt,
Kol ašarų būties taurėj
Aš dar neragavau,
Kodėl gi rožių vainike
Šešėliu nevirtau?

Kodėl įsirėžėt giliai
Atmintyje manoj,
Jaunystės ženklu nemariai,
Jūs, dainos, tų dienų?
Aš kalnus, slėnius ir šilus,
Jos žvilgsnį užmiršau:
Kodėl gi aidas jūs gaidų
Man skamba vis garsiau?

Nesugrąžinsit laimės man
Nors dvelkia jums jinai!
Senovėj dingusioj kadais
Ją palikau nūnai.
Nežadinkit, meldžiu, širdies
Iš snaudulio gilaus
Ir „myliu“, žodžio nevilties
Netarkite daugiau.
