Als over bergen zich de nevel uitbreidt,
De maan door wolken wordt geremd,
Dan neemt de oude man zijn harp op en schrijdt
Naar 't woud toe, zingend zacht gedempt:

"Jij, heil'ge nacht,
Dra is 't volbracht,
Dra komt voor mij de lange morgen,
Die mij verlost van alle zorgen."

De groene bomen ruisen dan:
"Slaap zacht, jij goede, oude man."
De grassen lisp'len, wuivend zacht:
"Zijn rustplaats krijgt van ons een vacht."

En menige lieve vogel pleit:
"In 'n bed van gras hem neergevlijd!"
De oude zwijgt, hij hoort een stem,
De dood buigt zich al over hem.
