Was soll uns die fröhliche Kunst? Die Liebe ist Dunst Und das flüchtige Leben ein Traum.

Why do you waken me in the dewy night, You nightingale, fluting of yearning? Now, with your melodious sound, An echo, too, Of bygone happiness has wakened. Today as you were jugging in the linden tree I embraced and kissed my rosy child; The strings of love trembled gently Like harps in the wind[;] Oh blessed May-dream! And when after many a year I returned, Her dear blue eyes were awash with tears Spring in her heart, spring upon the meadow Were gone, because a dew Had fallen upon them both. Why do you entice me again with darksome power, With lies of spring and of love’s joy? Since long ago already in my own breast The swelling blossoming has withered And the echoes of rejoicing songs have died away. Oh nightingale, fluting in the linden tree! Springtime passes away and the deceitful benevolence Of the gods . . . Of what use to us are the happy arts? Love is mist And fleeting life is a dream.
