Może [ziarna]2 prosisz? Może piosnkę nową Z cudzych stron przynosisz? Latasz, patrzysz w koło Czarnémi oczyma: Nie patrz tak wesoło, Nié ma jéj tu, nié ma! Poszła za żołniérza, [Rzuciła tę]3 chatkę; Koło tego krzyża Pożegnała matkę. Gdzie ten szlak na lewo, — Sciskała me nogi; A tam, gdzie to drzewo, Chciała wrócić z drogi! Może lecisz od niéj? Powiédzże mi przecie, Czy nie są tam głodni, Czy [dobrze im]4 w świecie? Czy o mnie mówiła Dobrémi tam słowy? Czy córeczka miła, Czy synek ich zdrowy?

Früh geht auf die Sonne und die Luft weht lau, wieder suchst du, Schwalbe, deinen alten Bau. Sonn'ge Frühlingstage werden heim nun kommen, von der langen Reise sei, Schwalbe, willkommen! Flieg' nicht weiter, weile, dass ich Körner streue! Sing' aus fremden Lande mir das Lied, das neue. In die Runde schickst du deine schwarzen Blicke, ach! du suchst vergebens, sie kehrt nicht zurücke. Kam der junge Krieger, nahm sie mit ins Weite, Mutter stand am Kreuze, gab ihr das Geleite. Bringst du von ihr Kunde? Ist sie wohl verdorben? Singe mir, ach, singe, ob sie gar gestorben.
