by Karl Johann Philipp Spitta (1801 - 1859)

Wie ist der Abend so traulich
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wie ist der Abend so traulich,
Wie lächelnd der Tag verschied;
Wie singen so herzlich erbaulich
[Die Vöglein]1 ihr Abendlied!

Die Blumen [müssen wohl schweigen]2,
Kein Ton ist Blumen beschert,
Doch, stille Beter, neigen
Sie alle das Haupt zur Erd'.

Wohin ich gehe und schaue,
[Ist Abendandacht. Im Strom
Spiegelt sich auch der blaue
Prächtige Himmelsdom.]3

Und alles betet lebendig
Um eine selige Ruh,
Und alles mahnt mich inständig:
O Menschenkind, bete auch du!
