Le grand lion rugit et la tempète gronde: À l'horizon fuyard, ni minaret, ni tour; La seule ombre qu'on ait, c'est l'ombre du vautour, Qui traverse le ciel, cherchant sa proie immonde. L'on avance toujours, et voici que l'on voit Quelque chose de vert que l'on se montre au doigt: C'est un bois de cyprès, semé de blanches pierres. Az ember-karaván, a lét sivatagán, A vissza nem térő évek nagy ösvenyén, Naptól pörkölve, oly lassan, vánszorgva mén, S a sós verítéket issza önönmagán. Oroszlán és vihar versenyt ordítanak, Nincs minaretnek itt s toronynak híre sem. Az egyetlen árnyék: a dögre-éhesen Kóválygó keselyű futó árnyéka csak. Mennek. S egyszerre ím bíztatva tűn elé Távol valami zöld; száz kéz mutat felé; Fehér kövek fölött ciprus-berek susog. A lét sivatagán, Isten, pihennetek A temetőt adá oázul, menjetek, S nyugodjatok meg ott, eltikkadt útasok.
