Liederlust
Language: German (Deutsch)
Es giebt [noch]1 auf Erden
Der Freuden genug,
Für Junge beim Tanze,
Für Alte beim Krug!
Doch Freude für Alle,
Für Jung und für Alt,
Ist da, wo im Kreise
Ein Liedchen erschallt!
Die Alten, die singen
Die Lieder im Baß
Und schauen vergnügter
Als je in das Glas.
Mild lächelt von ferne
Vergangenes Glück;
Im Lied kehrt den Alten
Die Jugend zurück!
Und gar erst die Jugend! --
O lustiger Klang!
Wo gäb's einen Frühling
Wol ohne Gesang?
Ja, Freude für Alle,
Für Jung und für Alt,
Ist da, wo im Kreise
Ein Liedchen erschallt!

Joy of songs
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
[There are still]1 upon earth
Joys enough,
For the young at the dance,
For the old at the tankard!
But joy for everyone,
For the young and for the old,
Is there where in a circle
A little song rings out!
The old, they sing
The songs in bass
And gaze more contendedly
Then ever into the glass.
From far away, gently smiling,
Is past happiness;
In the song the old ones
See the return of their youth!
And then the young ones! –
Oh merry sound!
Where would there be a springtime
Without song?
Yes, joy for everyone,
For the young and for the old,
Is there where in a circle
A little song rings out!
