by Hafis (c1327 - 1390)
Translation by Georg Friedrich Daumer (1800 - 1875)

Lieblich in der Rosenzeit
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Persian (Farsi)
Lieblich in der Rosenzeit
Hält die Liebe Schule;
Es docirt die Nachtigall
Vom Doktorenstuhle.

Ihrem Worte horcht Hafis
Mit Scholarentreue,
Früh und spat diktirt sie ihm
In die Federspule.

Meine Meinung, könnte sie
Wohl verborgen bleiben?
Wein an einem schönen Ort,
Eine zarte Buhle!

Ohne diesen Ächtgewinn
Sind die Weltgebiete
Wüsteneien, angefüllt
Vom Geschrei der Ghule.

Darum heiß zum Himmel auf
Fleh' ich im Gebete:
Nie, o nie errette mich
Aus dem Sündenpfuhle!
