El vell rei se’n va al bosc perquè avui hi ha cacera! El corser esbufega, sona el corn de caça, la canilla lladra al matossar. I quan el sol ja és a migjorn, allà, al clos de la fageda, la formosa filla del rei ha perdut el seu camí. Cavalca amb precaució i amb ella va el patge de cabells rossos, i si ella no fos la filla del rei, farien la més bonica parella. Ell l’esguarda, el seu cor palpita, el bosc esdevé cada cop més espès, les galtes li abrusen fins al front, amb les galtes enceses li diu: “Tu, dolça i encisadora princesa, no puc amagar-ho més, el meu jove cor s’esberla d’amor, el meu cor et pertany.” “Oh, si mai pogués besar tan sols una vegada els teus llavis vermells! Jo seria l’home més feliç del món, encara que per això hagués de morir.” Ella no li respon ni que sí ni que no, subjecta la brida del cavall, i quan baixa de la sella, ell li aguanta l’estrep. Ells s’endinsen en el bosc espès on el fullatge és tan ombrós, on el rossinyol canta l’amor i les tórtores parrupen. On creixen les vermelles roses silvestres a les verdes obagues; on a terra, la molsa fresca brinda un coixí per a l’amor. Ells s’ajeuen a la molsa, prop de les roses silvestres, deixen que els cavalls pasturin, ja no senten el cant del rossinyol ni tampoc els corns de caça. Tu, vell rei, no l’esperis més! La més formosa de les princeses, als braços del teu patge, t’ha oblidat a tu i al món sencer.
