Die Sterne überm Tale stehn,
Das Mühlrad nur man [höret]1,
Zum kranken Müller muß ich gehn,
Er hat den Freund [begehret]2.
Ich steig' hinab den Felsenstein,
Es donnert dumpf die Mühle,
Und eine Glocke tönt darein:
"Die Arbeit ist am Ziele!"
In Müllers Kammer tret' ich [nun]3:
Starr liegt das Greisen Hülle.
Es stockt sein Herz, die Pulse ruhn,
Und draußen auch wird's stille.
Die treuen Lieben weinen sehr,
Still bleibt sein Herz und kühle;
Die Wasser fließen wohl daher,
Still aber steht die Mühle.

Il y a des étoiles au-dessus de la vallée,
On n'entend que la roue du moulin,
Je dois aller chez le meunier malade,
Il voulait voir son ami.
Je descends par les rochers,
Le moulin gronde sourdement,
Et on y entend sonner une cloche :
« Le travail touche à sa fin !»
J'entre dans la chambre du meunier,
Le corps du vieillard gît, raide,
Son cœur se ralentit, son pouls s'arrête,
Et dehors aussi le silence s'installe.
Ses chers fidèles pleurent,
Son cœur reste silencieux et froid ;
L'eau continue bien de couler à côté,
Mais le moulin reste immobile;
