Indes der frevelnde Verbrecher
Im Strome der Zeit gewaltsam [untergeht]1,
Wenn am zerschmetterten Maste
Das Wetter die Segel ergreift.

Er ruft, von keinem Ohr vernommen,
Kämpft in des Strudels Mitte, hoffnungslos.
Des Frevlers lacht die Gottheit [nun]2,
Sieht ihn, nun nicht mehr stolz,
In Banden der Not verstrickt,
Umsonst die Felsbank fliehn;
An der Vergeltung Fels scheitert sein Glück,
Und unbeweint versinkt er.

Zo zal de man die zonder dwang gerecht is,
Geen slachtoffer zijn; 
vergaan totaal in rampspoed kan hij nimmer;
Terwijl de onrecht doende booswicht 
in 't  kolken des tijds ellendig ondergaat, 
Als aan de afgebroken1 scheepsmast
Het noodweer de zeilen verscheurt.

Hij roept, maar niets en niemand hoort hem,
Vecht  midden in de maalstroom, hopeloos.
Om de2 booswicht lacht de godheid nu,
Ziet hem -- nu niet meer trots --
In banden van nood verstrikt,
Vergeefs de klip ontgaan:
Op de vergeldingsrots breekt zijn geluk,
En onbeweend verzinkt hij.
