Fahrt zum Hades
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): CAT DUT ENG ENG FRE ITA
Der Nachen dröhnt, Cypressen flüstern -
Horch, Geister reden schaurig drein;
Bald werd' ich am Gestad', dem düstern,
Weit von der schönen Erde seyn.

Da leuchten Sonne nicht, noch Sterne,
Da tönt kein Lied, da ist kein Freund.
Empfang die letzte Thräne, [Ferne]1!
Die dieses müde Auge weint.

Schon [schaue ich die]2 Danaiden,
Den fluchbeladnen Tantalus;
Es murmelt todesschwangern Frieden,
Vergessenheit, dein alter Fluß.

Vergessen nenn' ich zwiefach Sterben,
Was ich mit höchster Kraft gewann,
Verlieren - wieder es erwerben -
Wann enden diese Qualen? wann?

Vaart naar de Hades
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)  after the German (Deutsch)
Het bootje dreunt, cipressen fluist'ren.
Hoor, geesten, hoor hun schril gedrein;
Dra zal ik aan de rand, de duist're,
Ver van de schone aarde zijn.

Daar schijnt geen zon of ster, geen manen,
Daar klinkt geen lied, ben je1 vrienden kwijt.
O verte2, ontvang de laatste3 tranen
Die dit vermoeide oog nog schreit.

Reeds zie ik de bleke Danaïden,
En Tantalus, gevloekt fantoom;
Van doodse rust vervulde lied'ren
Vergetelheid, bromt zacht jouw stroom.

Vergeten noem ik tweemaal sterven,
Wat ik ooit won, met moeite zeer,
Verliezen, - het opnieuw verwerven --
Wanneer4 eindigt deze kwelling? Wanneer?
