Den fluchbeladnen Tantalus;
Es murmelt todesschwangern Frieden,
Vergessenheit, dein alter Fluß.
Vergessen nenn' ich zwiefach Sterben,
Was ich mit höchster Kraft gewann,
Verlieren - wieder es erwerben -

Bientôt je serai sur le rivage lugubre
Loin de la belle terre.
Là pas de soleil lumineux, ni d'étoiles,
Là aucun chnat ne rententit, il n'y a pas d'ami.
Reçois, ô terre lointaine, les dernières larmes
Que mes yeux las ont versées.
Déjà je vois les pâles Danaïdes,
Et Tantale le maudit ;
On entend le murmure plein de la paix de la mort
De ton ancien flot, le fleuve de l'Oubli.
J'appelle l'oubli une seconde mort,
Ce que j'ai gagné avec une force extrême
Le perdre et à nouveau le gagner --
Quand ces tortures finiront-elles ? Quand ?
