Vriend'lijk is je aanschijn, Kind des hemels! Zacht kom je gegleden Door de lege ether, Lieve nachtgezellin! Je schijnsel is zacht en verkwikkend, Zo een eerlijk troostwoord Van bevriende lippen, Als een vreselijke aasgier Aan je ziel steeds knaagt. Heel wat tranen zie je, En ook vaak een glimlach, Hoort de liefde stilletjes wat fluist'ren, Licht haar bij op stille paden; Hoop zweeft op jouw zachte stralen Omlaag naar stille lijders, Die verlaten gaan op een doornig pad. Je ziet ook ginds mijn vrienden, Verstrooid in verre landen: Je giet je bleke schijnsel Ook op de blije heuvels, Waar ik vaak als jongen hupte, Waar dikwijls bij jouw glimlach Een onbekend verlangen Mijn jonge hart aangreep.
