Quando i miei grilli cantano,
a notte, accanto al focolare,
Contemplo con piacere
La fiamma familiare,
Sto allegro e sto sereno.
 
Per un'ora tranquilla
Sto in pace accanto al fuoco,
lo attizzo se si smorza,
e resto lì a pensare:
passato è un altro giorno!
 
E la gioia e il dolore
che mi ha portato il giorno,
mi tornano ancora in mente;
ma i brutti pensieri scaccio,
per non guastarmi il sonno.
 
Così ad un lieto sogno
Mi tengo preparato,
mentre una amata immagine
di gioia l'anima colma,
e mi abbandono al riposo.
 
O quanto son contento
Di questa vita rustica!
Quello che nel mondo in fermento
I folli cuori lega,
non reca appagamento.
 
Cantate ancora, grilli,
Nella mia cameretta.
Non mi annoia ascoltarvi: anzi mi dà diletto.
Se il vostro canto spezza il silenzio,
non sono solo del tutto.
