They have sent away my lover, Mother dear! Far away the broad seas over, Nought my anxious heart can ever cheer. Yet the priest for him is praying, Masses for the absent saying, Mother dear! Now he stands in armour shining, O Heaven! Death around him is entwining, O'er his grave the sad wind sighing; Nought avails my bitter crying, Nought the care of guarding angel, O Heaven! Ah, the foe! They slay unheeding Whom they strike, Whether heart of friend is bleeding, Whether love is silent pleading, Or a mother's heart be breaking, All alike their chance are taking, All alike! Smitten down by foeman cruel In battle, Low he lies, my love, my jewel, Help, O God, and grant in mercy That his wounds may yet be healed, All the wounds from which he suffers In battle. Look down from thy throne of glory, Queen of Heaven! See, I throw myself before thee, Hear, o hear me, I implore thee, In thy gracious care enfold him, Let me once again behold him, Queen of Heaven!
