So war mir's oft in der Kinderzeit,
Die Bäche gehen rauschend nieder
Durch die dämmernde Einsamkeit,
Kaum noch hört man einen Hirten singen,
Aus allen Dörfern, Schluchten, weit
Die Abendglocken herüberklingen,
Versunken nun mit Lust und Leid
Die Täler, die noch einmal blitzen,
Nur hinter dem stillen Walde weit
Noch Abendröte an den Bergesspitzen,
Wie Morgenrot der Ewigkeit.

In vecchiaia

Come ora tutto ridiventa tranquillo!
Come spesso nell'infanzia mi accadeva,
scrosciando precipita il ruscello
nella solitudine della sera,
si ode appena un canto di pastore,
e dai villaggi e dalle gole tutt'intorno
si sentono le campane del vespro risuonare,
fra gioie e dolori affonda lento il giorno
nella vallata che ancora una volta si infiamma,
solo lontano, dietro il quieto bosco,
indugia sulle cime il rosso del tramonto
come l'aurora della vita eterna.
