Darkly surges the wave of the river Where no star stands upon the heavens, No one has yet seen its source, No one knows whither it flows. That which greens joyfully along its shore, It seizes and bears along on its journey, And the god of the river rewards Neither sacrifice nor song. And the night becomes so eerie, And the boatsman sees no land, And the earth stands so sadly, As if banished from the sight of God. But upon the arch of the aether A star appears suddenly, And the grimness of the waves falls silent, And the gauze of the clouds tears open. Star of love, which we see, Your visage is comforting! As long as you stand upon the heavens, The earth shall not pass into nothingness.
