Voor vorst en nevels die maar blijven hangen, Zolang wij niet jouw aanschijn zien, het klare, Wil dan dit goede, heil'ge loof2 bewaren Waardoor jij eerst, en toen ik werd gevangen. En door de kracht van het verliefde hopen, Dat in je jeugd je niet liet ondergaan, Laat, van de druk bevrijd, de lucht verwarmen. Dan zullen wij, verwonderd toegelopen, In 't groene onze vrouwe gadeslaan, Schaduw zich gevend met haar eigen armen.
1 Apollo was, nadat hij geraakt was door een goudgepunte pijl van Cupido (Gr. Eros), hevig verliefd geraakt op de Thessalische nimf Daphne, die, getroffen door een loodgepunte pijl van dezelfde god, juist van de liefde afkerig was geworden. Toen zij wegrennend dreigde door Apollo overweldigd te worden, smeekte zij haar vader haar te redden. Deze veranderde haar in een laurierboom, die door Apollo in wanhoop omhelsd en gekust werd. Het verhaal is beschreven door Ovidius (Metamorphoses I. 452-567)
