gennem Vindvets aabne Sluse,
medens fjærne Bølger bruse
som et Hav af Valmudrømme:
Vindvet i! men tyst og varlig,
Søvnen er den Syge god,
men en saadan Søvn er farlig
med et Blomsterhav for Fod.

Lyse Dag med stærke Strømme, 
Solglans gennem Taagens Banker, 
faste Forsæt, rene Tanker, 
svale Pust af vaagne Drømme 
over Mandeviljens Hav: 
Morgnens Gry er Nattens Grav. 
Tak! den Haand, som Morgenhilsen 
med et ærligt Haandslag gav.

Douce nuit aux effluves de fleurs

Douce nuit aux effluves de fleurs
à travers la fenêtre ouverte,
tandis que mugissent de lointaines vagues,
pareilles à un océan de rouges pavots :
Ferme la fenêtre ! mais en silence et doucement,
le sommeil est un bienfait pour le malade,
mais un tel sommeil est dangereux
avec pour nourriture une mer de fleurs.

Jour lumineux aux puissants effluves,
éclat du soleil diffus dans les bancs de brouillard,
fermes résolutions, pensées pures,
souffle frais d'un rêve éveillé
sur l'océan des volontés humaines :
le crépuscule du matin est le tombeau de la nuit.
