Schon geträumt von diesem Glücke?
Warens nicht dieselben Bäume,
Blumen, Küsse, Liebesblicke?

Schien der Mond nicht durch die Blätter
Unsrer Laube hier am Bache?
Hielten nicht die Marmorgatter
Vor dem Eingang stille Wache?

Ach! ich weiß, wie sich verändern
Diese allzuholden Träume,
Wie mit kalten Schneegewändern
Sich umhüllen Herz und Bäume;

Wie wir selber dann erkühlen
Und uns fliehen und vergessen,
Wir, die jetzt so zärtlich fühlen,
Herz an Herz so zärtlich pressen.

N'étaient-ce point les mêmes arbres,
Fleurs, baisers et regards amoureux ?

À travers les feuilles, la lune n'éclairait-elle pas
Notre tonnelle près du ruisseau ?
Les balustres de marbre devant l'entrée
Ne montaient-elles pas une garde silencieuse ?

Hélas ! Je sais combien s'altèrent
Ces rêves bien trop charmants,
Comment cœurs et arbres s'entourent
De froids murs de neige.

Comment ensuite nos ardeurs tiédissent,
Comment nous nous fuyons et nous oublions,
Nous qui aujourd'hui sommes si tendres,
Tendrement serrés cœur contre cœur.
