Ein Jüngling auf dem Hügel Mit seinem Kummer saß, Wohl ward der Augen Spiegel Ihm trüb' und tränennaß. Sah frohe Lämmer spielen Am grünen Felsenhang, Sah frohe Bächlein quillen Das bunte Tal entlang; Die Schmetterlinge sogen Am roten Blütenmund, Wie Morgenträume flogen Die Wolken in dem Rund; Und alles war so munter, Und alles schwamm in Glück, Nur in sein Herz hinunter Sah nicht der Freude Blick. Ach, dumpfes Grabgeläute Im Dorfe nun erklang, Schon tönte aus der Weite Ein klagender Gesang; Sah nun die Lichter [scheinen]1, Den schwarzen Leichenzug, Fing bitter an zu [weinen]2, Weil man sein Röschen trug. Jetzt ließ den Sarg man nieder, Der Totengräber kam, Und gab der Erde wieder, Was Gott aus selber nahm. Da schwieg des Jünglings Klage, Und betend ward sein Blick, Sah schon am schönern Tage Des Wiedersehens Glück. Un giovinetto sulla collina stava seduto con il suo dolore. e d’improvviso la luce degli occhi gli si oscurò, riempiendosi di lacrime. Vedeva gli agnelli giocare felici sul verde pendio roccioso, vedeva il ruscello scorrere allegro lungo la valle variopinta. Le farfalle suggevano alla rossa bocca dei fiori, simili a bei sogni mattutini le nubi volteggiavano intorno. E ogni cosa era così gioconda, ogni cosa pareva immersa nella felicità; solo dentro il suo cuore non scorgeva l’immagine della gioia. Ahimè, la cupa squilla della morte echeggiò in quel momento dal villaggio e risuonò quindi in lontananza un canto lamentoso. Quando vide le luci brillare e apparve il nero corteo funebre, prese a piangere più amaramente, perché portavano via la sua Rosina. Poi abbassarono il sarcofago, giunse l’affossatore, e restituì alla terra quello che Dio si era ripreso. Allora il giovinetto smise di lamentarsi e il suo sguardo s’illuminò nella preghiera: già scorgeva il giorno radioso in cui si sarebbero ritrovati nella felicità. E, mentre apparivano le stelle e la luna veleggiava nel cielo, lesse nel firmamento un sublime messaggio di speranza.
