Blasse, nebelnde Schatten
Kommen und schwinden zurück
Und schauen mich an mit dem matten,
Dem todesstarren Blick.
Sie sprechen von alten Tagen,
Von alter Lieb' und Lust
Und sinken mit Weinen und Klagen
Mir an die klopfende Brust.
Still, Herz; du hoffst vergebens,
Daß der Tod es zurück dir giebt,
Was in dämmernder Frühe des Lebens

Des voix connues arrivent

Des ombres blafardes et nébuleuses
Arrivent et repartent en s'amenuisant,
Elles me regardent avec le regard
Languissant, figé de la mort.
Elles parlent des jours anciens
D'amours et de plaisirs passés
Et en pleurant et gémissant
Défaillent sur ma poitrine palpitante.
Sois calme, mon cœur ; tu espères en vain
