In ein freundliches Städtchen tret' ich ein,
In den Straßen liegt roter Abendschein.
Aus einem offnen Fenster eben, 
Über den reichsten Blumenflor
Hinweg, hört man Goldglockentöne schweben,
Und eine Stimme scheint ein Nachtigallenchor,
Daß die Blüten beben,
Daß die Lüfte leben,
Daß in höherem Rot die Rosen leuchten vor.

Lang' hielt ich staunend, lustbeklommen.
Wie ich hinaus vor's Tor gekommen,
Ich weiß es wahrlich selber nicht.
Ach hier, wie liegt die Welt so licht!
Der Himmel wogt in purpurnem Gewühle,
Rückwärts die Stadt in goldnem Rauch;
Wie rauscht der Erlenbach, wie rauscht im Grund die Mühle,
Ich bin wie trunken, irrgeführt --
O Muse, du hast mein Herz berührt
Mit einem Liebeshauch!

En balade

J'arrive dans une charmante petite ville ;
dans les rues s'étale le couchant rougeoyant.
D'une fenêtre entrouverte là-bas,
au-dessus d'un riche fouillis de fleurs,
on entend en suspens comme le tintement d'une cloche d'or
et une voix qui semble un choeur de rossignols,
qui fait frémir les bourgeons,
trembler l'air, 
et les roses resplendir d'un plus beau rouge.

Je suis longtemps resté là, interdit, le coeur vrillé de désir..
Comment j'ai repassé les portes de la ville ?
Je n'en sais vraiment rien moi-même.
Ah, comme le monde ici est lumineux !
Le ciel ondoie en une houle pourpre,
derrière moi la ville disparaît dans un poudroiement d'or ;
comme il gazouille, le ruisseau bordé d'aulnes, 
comme il murmure, le moulin dans la vallée ! 
Je suis comme ivre, égaré 
-ô Muse, tu m'as apaisé le coeur d'un souffle d'amour !
