Auf schweigendem Bergesgipfel Der Knabe des Thales ruht Und blickt in die ziehenden Wolken, In die sterbende Sonnenglut: "O schwebt' ich, wie Götter im Bronnen Des Aethers, im Sternenraum!" - Er entschlummert - olympische Wonnen Umfangen ihn hold im Traum. Es steigt sein Busen voll Sehnen Nach der Uranionen Glück, Und es öffnet sich trüb' vor Thränen Noch halb im Traume sein Blick: "Was hör' ich so lockend klingen? Was rauscht mir so wunderbar Um's Haupt mit goldenen Schwingen? Was willst du, kreisender Aar?" Und er fühlt sich auf Fitt'gen gehoben. "Ach, träum' ich noch immer? o Glück!" Es trägt ihn, es reißt ihn nach oben, Tief weichen die Berge zurück! "O süsses Sehnen und Hoffen! Fahr' wohl du nächtliches Thal: In ewigem Blau steht offen Der strahlende Göttersaal!"

Au sommet silencieux de la montagne L'enfant de la vallée se repose Et regarde courir les nuages Dans les braises du soleil agonisant : « Ô puissé-je planer comme les dieux Dans les espaces étoilés de l'éther ! » Il s'endort ; les délices olympiennes L'enlacent avec grâce dans son rêve. Sa poitrine pleine de langueur se soulève À la pensée du bonheur des Immortels, Et il ouvre ses yeux troublés de larmes, Encore à moitié captif de son rêve. « Qu'ouïs-je tinter avec tant d'attirance, Quelles sont ces ailes d'or qui autour de ma tête Bruissent si merveilleusement, Que veux-tu, aigle tournoyant ? » Alors il se sent soulevé sur des ailes. « Ah, suis-je encore dans mon rêve ? Ô bonheur ! » Il est transporté, il est entraîné vers le ciel ; La montagne recule au loin : « Ô douce langueur , doux espoir, Au revoir, ténébreuse vallée. La rayonnante salle des dieux Est ouverte dans l'azur éternel. »
