Als hoch das Feld in Blumen stand,
Und als die Schwalbe flog ins Land:
Da blühte sie empor in mir,
Die Liebe, schöne Frau, zu dir.

Und als der Tag am längsten war,
So blau und heiß, so sonnenklar:
Da war die Liebe heiß und hoch
Und ich war selig -- weißt du's noch?

Da ward es Herbst, die Schwalben ziehn,
Und schweigend zogst auch du dahin;
Und wie das Laub vom Baume sank:
Da war ich stumm, da war ich krank!

Das ist der Liebe alter Gang,
Sie geht so tief, sie geht so lang!
Nun kommt der Winter und der Schnee,
Ich geh' zu Grund an ihrem Weh!
