Liegt irgendwo im weiten Meer
Ein selig, weltverloren Land,
Still ziehn die Wolken drüber her,
Und leise ebbt die Fluth am Strand.

Uralte Bäume [grünen]1 dort
Und wölben sich zum dichten Hain,
In den drang nie ein Menschenwort,
Nie eines Menschen Blick hinein.

Aus purpurroten Kelchen steigt
Ein seltsam süßer, müder Hauch,
Versonnen sich der Himmel neigt
Und reglos träumen Busch und Strauch.

Am Ufer schaukelt sich ein Kahn,
Die Wellen plätschern [sacht]2 am Kiel.
Wen holt er ab auf weiter Bahn,
Wen trägt er her zum selgen Ziel?

Ach, [daß]3 der Kahn mich holen müßt'
[Aus]4 dieser bangen, bangen Zeit,
Daß ich den Weg zu finden wüßt
Zur Insel der Vergessenheit.

L'île de l'oubli

Il y a quelque part dans la vaste mer
Un pays bienheureux abandonné du monde,
Là-bas les nuages passent en silence,
Et sur la plage la marée descend doucement.

De très anciens arbres y verdissent
Et forment une voûte dans le bois touffu
Où jamais ne pénètre ni parole humaine
Ni le regard d'un homme.

D'un calice pourpre monte
Un étrange effluve, doux et faible,
Le ciel méditatif s'incline
Et buisson et arbuste rêvent, immobiles.

Près du rivage, une barque se balance,
Les vagues clapotent doucement contre sa quille.
Qui est-elle venue chercher  sur cette route éloignée,
Qui porte-t-elle vers une bienheureuse destination ?

Ah, si la barque pouvait me transporter
Hors de ces jours d'angoisse, d'angoisse,
Afin que je sache trouver le chemin
Vers l'île de l'oubli.
