Im Morgendämmer fuhr ich über Land -
die Äcker stumm - die Wälder schwarz und tot -
bis endlich an des Himmels fernstem Rand
sich Streifen zeigten, gelb und rosig rot.

Nicht lange, und wie Feuer und wie Blut
entstieg der Ball den Nebeln feucht und kalt,
und übergoss die Flur mit Purpurglut
und wandelte in wogend Gold den Wald.

Und auch auf mich im Wagenzwielicht traf
ein Blitz, mich strahlend wappnend wie zum Streit,
und küsste meine Seele aus dem Schlaf:
Ein Flammengruß aus der Unendlichkeit.

Dans le crépuscule du matin je roulais dans le pays --
les champs étaient silencieux -- les forêts, noires et mortes --
jusqu'à ce que finalement à l'extrême bord du ciel
se montrent des zébrures jaunes et roses.

Peu de temps après, pareille à du feu et du sang,
une boule émergea des brouillards humides et froids,
et se déversa sur les terres comme un brasier pourpre
et changea la forêt en un or ondoyant.

Et dans le demi-jour de ma voiture je fus aussi frappé
par un éclair m'irradiant et m'armant comme pour le combat,
et qui par un baiser sortit mon âme de son sommeil :
Un salut de feu de l'infinitude.
