by Guido (Pieter Theodoor Jozef) Gezelle (1830 - 1899)
Translation by Rudolf Alexander Schröder (1878 - 1962)

Winterstilte
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
Een witte spree
ligt overal
gespreid op 's werelds akker;
geen mensche en is,
men zeggen zou,
geen levend herte wakker.

Het vogelvolk,
verlegen en
verlaten, in de takken
des perebooms
te piepen hangt,
daar niets en is te pakken!

't Is even stille
en stom alhier
aldaar; en, ondertusschen,
en hoore ik maar
het kreunen meer,
en 't kriepen, van de musschen.

Spelling changes used by Nees: zeggen -> zegge

Winterstille
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Dutch (Nederlands)
Our translations:  ENG
Ein Leilach weiß
Deckt weit und breit
Allum den Weltenacker.
Kein Mensch, und -- sollt
Man meinen -- 's wär
Kein lebend Herze wacker.

Das Vogelvolk
Verlegen und
Verlassen in den Zacken
Des Birnbaums hangt
Und piept, da nichts
Zu picken und zu packen.

's ist alles still
Und stumm allhier,
Allferne. Nur ein Schwatzen
Vernimmst du
Unterweilen noch
Und ein Geschwirr der Spatzen.
