Nicolas, laß es uns gut gehen,
so lang wir Muße haben,
laß uns Sorge und Leid aus dem Weg gehen
die uns die Freude verderben wollen.
Reinigen wir unser feuriges Temperament
von Geiz und Ehrgeiz,
laßt uns Philosophen sein,
bar jeder Leidenschaft.
Weg mit der Sorge, der Mühe,
begnügen wir uns damit nichts zu sein,
wenn unsere Seele dann ganz gesundet ist,
geht es auch dem Körper gut.
Wenn das Fieber, schon die Erinnerung daran lässt mich schaudern,
dich nichts anderes gelehrt hätte
als einen guten Tropfen zu schätzen,
dann darfst du es jetzt nicht aufgeben:
Trink! Trink regelmäßig, und immer wieder, trink!
Und immer wieder wenn
dich das Bedürfnis packt, zu trinken, trinke!
Trink immer wieder, bedenke
das Leben ist kurz, kürzer als ein Finger.
