 Sich jedes Herz einst zugewandt,
 Stirbt jetzt, als hätt' er keinen Freund,
 Hier ungesehn und unbeweint.

Der Jüngling
 Ach, einen Tropfen nur aus dem See,
 Zu kühlen das fiebrisch brennende Weh,
 Ach, einen Tropfen nur aus der Flut,
 Zu kühlen die fiebrische Glut!

 Fra il fogliame del bosco, presso il placido lago
 sospira un giovane in profondo dolore:
 contagiato dal morbo mortale, si è là rifugiato
 per porre fine al suo tormento.
 Egli, che in vita, ovunque si trovava
 riusciva a conquistare ogni cuore,
 muore adesso come se non avesse amici,
 senza che alcuno che lo assista e lo pianga.

Il giovane
 Ah, una sola goccia di questo lago,
 potesse arrecare frescura all'arsura bruciante,
 ah, una sola goccia di quelle onde
 per calmare l'ardore della febbre!
