Einen Engel, liebes Kind
Language: German (Deutsch)
Einen Engel, liebes Kind,
Hat dir Gott gegeben,
Der, wenn du recht fromm gesinnt,
Stets dich wird umschweben.

Wenn du bei des Morgen Schein
Nicht versäumst zu beten,
Dann wird in dein Kämmerlein
Still der Engel treten;

Bleibt bei dir den ganzen Tag,
Wird dich treu bewahren,
Daß kein Leid und Ungemach
Dir kann widerfahren;

Hält dir alles Böse fern,
Daß du nicht mußt weinen,
Bis der goldne Abendstern
Ruft zu Bett die Kleinen.

Sprichst du dann vor'm Schlafengehn
Fromm den Abendsegen,
Wird der Engel bei dir stehn,
Wiegen dich und pflegen;

Wird auch einen bunten Traum
Dir, mein Kindchen, schicken,
Läßt wohl gar den Weihnachtsbaum
Dich im Traum erblicken.

Wie der Engel angethan,
Soll ich dir verkünden?
Weiße Kleider hat er an,
Weil er rein von Sünden;

Auch zwei goldne Flügel sind
Ihm vom Herrn verliehen,
Daß er von dem bösen Kind
Eilig könne fliehen.1

The guardian angel
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
An angel bright and holy
God has sent from high
To watch thee, my sweet baby,
With kind and loving eye.

Children's simple little pray'rs
He reveres and he blesses,
And when they're good he covers them
With his holy kisses.

He'll remain with thee all day
Bending gently o'er thee
And he'll spread his silver wings
Lovingly before thee.

He will wipe the tears away
From my darling's brown eyes,
He will watch her tenderly
All the night till sunrise.

He will waft thy little pray'r
That no harm betide thee,
Straight to God's white throne above
Where he will surely guide thee.

He will send thee dreams, my babe,
Sweet dreams of pretty things,
Dreams of pretty Christmas gifts
Hidden 'neath his wings.
