Das war der Junker Übermut,
Die Stirne frei, den schlappen Hut
Verwegen nur im Nacken;
Laut klirrten ihm die Hacken.

Das war die Jungfer züchtiglich,
Ging stets einher, als schämt' sie sich,
Als könnt' sie beim Spazieren
Ihr Seelenheil verlieren.

Das war, das war, das ist, das ist.
Sein Rößlein ihren Hafer frißt,
Er sitzt zu ihren Füßen
Und muß im Garne büßen.

[Draus wirkt]1 sie ihm ein weiches Hemd,
Das macht ihn welt- und menschenfremd;
Der Rest, daß sie ihn nütze,
Der Rest giebt eine Mütze.

Was sagt er [jetzt]2, Herr Übermut?
Schön gute Nacht, und schlaf er gut!
Das Spiel hat er verloren,
Sein Weib gewann die Sporen.

el front descobert, la pallola
amb desimboltura al coll;

Era la modèstia de la donzella,
ella caminava sempre com si tingués vergonya,
com si al passejar
pogués perdre la salvació eterna.

Els cavalls d’ell mengen la civada d’ella,
ell seu als seus peus
i ha de pagar el fil.

Amb el fil, ella li fa una fina camisa,
que el fa estrany al món i als homes,
el que resta també serà per a ell,
amb el que resta li farà una gorra.

Ara què dieu, senyor Arrogant?
Bona nit i dormiu bé!
Ell ha perdut el joc,
la seva dona ha guanyat els esperons.
