Era l’arrogància del terratinent, el front descobert, la pallola amb desimboltura al coll; feia picar fort els talons. Era la modèstia de la donzella, ella caminava sempre com si tingués vergonya, com si al passejar pogués perdre la salvació eterna. Això era, això era i ara això és, això és. Els cavalls d’ell mengen la civada d’ella, ell seu als seus peus i ha de pagar el fil. Amb el fil, ella li fa una fina camisa, que el fa estrany al món i als homes, el que resta també serà per a ell, amb el que resta li farà una gorra. Ara què dieu, senyor Arrogant? Bona nit i dormiu bé! Ell ha perdut el joc, la seva dona ha guanyat els esperons.
