Lüfte einmal nur den Schleier
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Turkish (Türkçe)
Our translations:  ENG
Lüfte einmal nur den Schleier,
Hebe deine weißen Lider! --
Feuervöglein mit Gefunkel
Flattern glitzernd auf und nieder,
Tief in deines Auges Dunkel --
     [Assaïdy]1!

Lüfte einmal nur den Schleier!
[Tageslärm, er ist vergessen --
Sieh, schon wirft der Mond]2 im Bogen
Über schwarze Bergzypressen
Goldne Ketten auf die Wogen --
     [Assaïdy]1!

Lüfte einmal nur den Schleier!
-- Ufer fern -- so nah die Lippen --
Meeresfluth, wer mag sie trinken?
-- -- Thau von Rosen möcht' ich nippen! --
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Lass, o lass den Schleier sinken,
     [Assaïdy]1!

Lüfte einmal nur den Schleier!
Fühle meine Hand, die starke,
Zittre, [Süsse]3, für dein Leben --
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
[Zitternd]4 lenk ich deine Barke,
Willst du jetzt den Schleier heben,
     [Assaïdy]1?!

Confirmed with: Rosenblätter. Lieder und Sprüche des Volkssängers und Improvisators Assim-Agha Gül hanedé, Dem Neutürkischen nachgedichtet von Bernhardine Schulze-Smidt, Leipzig: Verlag von Schmidt & Günther, 1893, pages 37-38.

Note: There are two typos in the Erdmannsdörfer-Fichtner score. Stanza 4 line 2 "Füle" instead of "Fühle"; stanza 4 line 3 "Süse" instead of "Süsse." Furthermore, some of the spelling has been modernized.

1 Erdmannsdörfer-Fichtner: "Assaiydih!"
2 Rheinberger: "Tageslärm ist längst vergessen, / Und der Mond wirft schon"
3 Rheinberger: "Holde"
4 Rheinberger: "bebend"

Only raise your veil once
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Only raise your veil once,
Lift your white eyelids! --
Sparkling fire-birds
Flutter, glinting, up and down,
Deep within the darkness of your eyes --
     [Assaïdy]1!

Only raise your veil once!
[The bustle of the day, it is forgotten --
See how], over the black mountain cypress trees,
The moon is already arching
Golden chains over the waves --
     [Assaïdy]1!

Only raise your veil once!
-- The shore is far away – lips are so close --
The ocean's flood, who could drink it?
-- -- I would like to sip the dew of roses! --
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Let, oh let the veil fall,
     [Assaïdy]1!

Only raise your veil once!
Feel my hand, my strong hand,
Quake, [sweet one]3, for your life --
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Tremblingly I steer your barque,
Will you now lift your veil,
     [Assaïdy]1?!
