Im stillen Stübchen dämmert die Nacht, Am Bettlein sitzet ein Weib und wacht; Ein blonder Knabe lächelt ihr zu Am Mutterbusen, wie fromm die Ruh'! Sie wieget und singet beim Lampenschein: "Arm der Liebe - so schlummre ein!" Im kühlen Grunde am Waldeshang - Die Wipfel rauschten, die Quelle klang; Wir saßen einsam, nur ich und du. Ach, Herz am Herzen, wie süß die Ruh'! Du sangst in die Seele mir tief hinein: "Im Arm der Liebe - so schlummre ein!" Vom Friedhof tönet ein Glöcklein bang' Dem Pilger zu seinem letzten Gang; Hier legt'er nieder so Stab und Schuh: Im Schoß der Erde, wie tief die Ruh'! Sie senken hinab den schwarzen Schrein: "Im Arm der Liebe - so schlummre ein!"
